As I have mentioned before I am not normally one to suggest formal learning before school, learning for preschoolers should be done in a way that is and feels like play rather than learning. However, when Hachette Australia sent me this First Phonics book I thought it would be a wonderful resource for the 3 year old and above age group, particularly if they are going to 3 year old Kinder.
There is a lot to love about this book, particularly the information for parents, teachers, caregivers in the front and rear of the book. The information explains what phonics is, how to sound out words and a glossary. I particularly found this part of the information positive:
Relax – Parents can often feel daunted by phonics…but there are plenty of ways to make it fun and friendly.
I have mixed thoughts about the pen and eraser on the front. The pen having its own compartment is great, it keeps it all together which means less chance of getting lost. However, the book doesn’t sit flat on that side which makes writing difficult.
I like that there are a variety of activities throughout the book. It is showing that phonics can be learnt in different ways. It keeps it interesting for the children and is not repetitive
I think that being able to use this resource over and over makes it great value for money, especially considering it is only $9.99. So if you are looking at doing some work on phonics with your preschooler/kindergarten age child that I can certainly recommend this item.
Thank you to Hachette Publishers for the opportunity to read this item for an honest review.
