Julia Donaldson’s number one bestselling story The Detective Dog is now in board book and is just as delightful in this compact form as it was in its original print runs.  Julia Donaldson’s words flow with ease, and the illustrations by Sara Ogilvie connect with this story to bring us Detective Dog Nell’s adventures.

Detective Dog Nell is known for her keen sense of smell, she sniffs wherever she goes and solves crimes.  Nell’s other super duper talent is that she goes to school with Peter (who she lives with) and listens to students read, oh what fun.  Well it is fun until the morning she turns up at the school and all the school books have disappeared, Detective Dog Nell gets on the job.

The illustrations are busy and probably not ideal to use with a baby, however as I have said many times over board books just aren’t for babies and this book is most suited to the 3-5 year old age group.  The talented Sara Ogilvie and Julia Donaldson combine their talents to exude fun and whimsy which is the essence to children’s books.

Nell is particularly endearing looking dog and has a face that makes you love his character, this says a lot about both the author and illustrator’s characterisation of him.

Overall, this is a book I would recommend.

Thank you to Pan MacMillan for the opportunity to read and honestly review this book
