In the Enchanted Ruby we are introduced to Scarlett, lily, and Zina; whose adventures take us to the secret island which Scarlett calls Bear Island.  Scarlett is excited to share this place with her friends and for them to see all the animals that inhabit the Island.   On this trip when a baby otter – they name Sparky – is injured by a speeding boat, the princesses soon embark on an adventure to find his family.  This calls on the princesses to use ninja moves, solve a mystery, and saving jewels.  This soon has them looking forward to more rescue princess adventures.

This book is perfect for your little one who is gaining confidence in their reading and likes a little bit of adventure, especially when it comes to princesses and animals.  The author has really connected with her readers by writing about what a lot of 7-9-year-old children enjoy, especially the adventure part of the story.  The author has made a fun story that has the reader wondering what is going to happen next.  Fortunately, the chapters aren’t too long which means it is an achievable read and your child doesn’t have to wait too long to get through each chapter.

The writing is large, and with the combination of black and white illustrations it will encourage the struggling reader to keep going with it.  The front cover with its mystical blue coloured water, green trees, Sparky the gorgeous little otter and Princess Scarlett invites the reader to turn the page and find out what adventures await.

Overall, this is a well written book that has a lovely, simple story that will engage and delight the young reader.  Best of all there are many others in the series and the reader gets to meet lots of other princesses.  With the addition of illustrations by Sharon Tancredi, the reader is treated to a visualization of the adventure.  I recommend this book for all children who love reading about princesses, animals – especially cute otters, and going on adventures that require the odd ninja move.

Thankyou Allen & Unwin and Nosy Crow for the opportunity to read and honestly review this book.
